In addition to Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degrees from the University of Adelaide, and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of South Australia, James has completed post-graduate studies. He holds a Master of Laws degree from the Australian National University.
James commenced his legal career in Canberra in the Australian Public Service. While there, he worked in different agencies, including as a lawyer at Comcare (the Commonwealth workers' compensation authority), and on a secondment to the staff of a parliamentary committee.
After five years in the Australian Public Service, James went to work as a legal officer for the Law Council of Australia, the peak national body representing the legal profession. While there, he was involved in lobbying and submissions on issues including personal injuries and insurance, and regulation of the legal profession.
In 2005, he left Canberra to come to Melbourne, practising initially as a barrister for two years. While at the Bar, James practised broadly in commercial litigation, accident compensation and criminal law, with special interests in Commonwealth legislation and in administrative law.
Now at Brand Partners, James brings his court experience to help clients navigate the legal process without losing sight of their business objectives.
Outside the law, James attempts to be a better film buff.
