AREAS OF EXPERTISE
James is a Senior Associate who practices principally in litigation. He assists clients in industries including property development, manufacturing and insolvency practice, as well as private individuals.
James has dealt with matters in the Federal Court, all the Victorian civil courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal and also cases in the Queensland and Western Australian Supreme Courts. He has dealt with a wide range of matters, from relatively straight forward debt collection and enforcement, through to complicated multi-party disputes. As well as contractual claims, James has dealt with matters involving breaches of confidential information, insolvency, professional negligence and regulatory/disciplinary cases.
James commenced his legal career in Canberra in the Australian Public Service. While there, he worked in different agencies, including as a lawyer at Comcare (the Commonwealth workers' compensation authority). After five years in the Australian Public Service, James went on to work as a legal officer for the Law Council of Australia, the peak national body representing the legal profession.
In 2005, he left Canberra to come to Melbourne, practising initially as a barrister for two years. While at the Bar, James practised broadly in commercial and civil litigation. From 2008, James has been at Brand Partners.
In addition to Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degrees from the University of Adelaide, and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the University of South Australia, James has completed post-graduate studies. He holds a Master of Laws degree from the Australian National University.
At Brand Partners, James brings his court experience to help clients navigate the legal process – including outside formal court proceedings – always keeping focus on what the client wants to achieve.
Outside the law, James’ interest in stories has seen him finish previously half read novels (including by Charles Dickens and Patrick White; Hilary Mantel and Lawrence Durrell are the next on his list).
